Landlovers 50th!

We are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Landings Landlovers.  This wonderful organization has been focused on Enriching The Community We Love since its simple beginnings in 1974. A small group of ladies gathered at Carol Sangster’s home to decide how they would work together for the best interests of the Landings residents.  There were only 35 homes in 1974 so their challenge was modest at the outset, but ideas for new activities, events and projects expanded as more roads and homes were added to the island. 50 years later we continue their work as we look for new opportunities to serve the residents.

To celebrate the 50 years, we will share stories and accomplishments of the Landlovers group through various articles and pictures.  Reading through these stories you will find the first ideas and suggestions started within Landlovers for many of the events and groups we have on the island today. This includes New Neighbors, various sewing clubs, green thumb, support for the First Responders, tennis and golf socials, oyster roast and low country boil, and of course the Flea Market. We hope you enjoy these bits of Landlovers and Skidaway Island history.

In the first four years of Landlovers there were two Tour of Homes events.  These raised $3,000 which helped pay for improvements at Marshwood – an outdoor clock, landscaping and an electric bug zapper (ah the memories of listening to a bug zapper!).  A health emergency for a resident resulted in the Landlovers funding the purchase of a $400 Recussci-Annie doll (Annie Doll) for CPR training.

A Newcomers team formed to welcome new residents to the Landings with an information package and a beautiful house plant.  As time passed this team eventually evolved into the highly successful New Neighbors organization.  New clubs formed during this period, which included a sewing group, bridge, gourmet, nature, Savannah Tours, and reading groups. The nature group evolved into the current Audubon group which is very large and varied.  By the end of 1970’s there was a larger number of families and a desire to sponsor activities for the kids.  These included Halloween parties and other events for young children, teens and college students.  Perhaps we need to revisit this initiative given the very large number of families and children on the island in 2024.
